Somatics is a field that explores the mind/body connection, with practices such as yoga, bodywork, and dance. In a similar way, somatic coaching is a form of life coaching that incorporates movement.

We can see the power of movement in the animal world—often, after something traumatic or stressful, like being hunted, an animal will shake it off and then move on. This movement completes the stress cycle.

In contrast, as humans, we often live in a cycle of stress: something difficult happens and then we continue on with our lives, without it being resolved. That can bring heaviness and ongoing stress, with ongoing tenderness around it.

Somatic coaching is a way to resolve stress cycles through movement. It’s healing to move—even if it’s way later after an event has happened!

I’ll address some common questions about somatic coaching below.

What if I don’t feel comfortable moving?

For starters, that’s completely understandable! As a society, we tend to live most of our lives in our heads, so connecting with movement feels foreign. As a coach, I provide a safe space for people to explore. No expectations. No demands. You don’t even have to move as you get started, if you prefer! If you’re open to exploring movement, somatic coaching can help—no matter where you start from.

What does a typical session look like?

I start sessions by talking: checking in, asking about things going well in your life (it’s important to celebrate wins!), and discussing what you’d like to work on. In this part, we can explore the origin of patterns or the color/texture/quality of a belief or emotion by tuning into an area. From there, we’ll create a safe space for movement through a guided meditation. I’ll give you options to explore what you said you want to work on through movement.

We’ll try different things, play, see what works and what doesn’t. You are in the driver’s seat the entire time. You can say you want to do something else, have a different song playing—anything. This session is for you, not my ego.

We’ll wind down and talk about what came up in the session. I’ll give you things you can do between sessions to continue the work (and if you end up not doing it, it’s totally OK; it happens and you gotta be kind to yourself.)

I’ll close with some genuine compliments and encouragement for you (even though we have the power to give this to ourselves, I think it’s powerful to hear kind words; I’m a words of affirmation girlie.)

With that said, every session is for you and your growth. If you need something different, I’m always happy to customize a session to meet your unique needs in each moment.
